The Tinline Family of Nether Ancrum, Roxburghshire


James Tinlin.  Probably married his first wife in the 1690’s [calc.].  Living in Nether Ancrum, Roxburghshire in Feb 1721 [reg. (time of son’s marriage)].  He is probably the James Tinlin, “widdow”, who married Agnas Kirtoun on 10 Dec 1721 in Ancrum [reg. – second proclamation].  At the time, he was living in Ancrum and she was living in Eckford, Roxburghshire [reg.].  [A Thomas Tinling was also living in Nether Ancrum before 1711 (see Scottish Dictionary)].  He had a son by his first wife:

John Tinline.  He married Hellen Wilkie on 19 Feb 1721 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [reg. – proclaimed for first time].  She was the daughter of Thomas Wilkie of Ancrum [reg.].  They were living in Ancrum, Roxburghshire in Aug 1722 through Dec 1735 [reg.].  In 1728 he was called a “keelman” [reg.].  They had children [two daughters named Helen?]:

1. Agnas Tinline.  Chr. 19 Aug 1722 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [reg.].

2. Janet Tinline.  Chr. 4 Aug 1725 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [reg.].

3. James Tinline.  Chr. 3 Aug 1728 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [reg.].  He married Ann White on 28 Oct 1759 in Ancrum [reg.].  Living in Haustains, Ancrum in Aug 1760, Apr 1762, in Stockstruther, Roxburgh, Roxburghshire in Jul 1765, Dec 1768, May 1771, Jun 1773 and in Nisbet, Crailing, Roxburghshire in Dec 1775, Jul 1778, Oct 1784 [reg.].  They had children:

1a. John Tinline.  Chr. 8 Aug 1760 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [reg.].

2a. Christian Tinline.  Chr. 11 Apr 1762 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [reg. under Christen].  She married John Mitchell on 17 Jul 1789 in Melrose, Roxburghshire (consignation money paid 9 Aug 1789 in Crailing, Roxburghshire) [reg. trans. of Melrose, reg. of Crailing].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Melrose and she was living in Crailing [reg. trans.].

3a. Helen Tinline.  Chr. 28 Jul 1765 in Roxburgh, Roxburghshire [reg.].

4a. James Tinline [probably].  See TINLIN FAMILY OF BINBROOK.

5a. William Tinlane.  Chr. 26 Dec 1768 in Roxburgh, Roxburghshire [reg.].

6a. Ann Tinlane.  Chr. 27 May 1771 in Roxburgh, Roxburghshire [reg.].

7a. Richard Tinline.  Born in 1772, and chr. 17 Jun 1773 in Roxburgh, Roxburghshire [reg. as Tinlane, tombstone].  In 1801 he was living in Turn, Kirktown, working as a servant [LBR, reg.].  He married Isabel Oliver on 11 Apr 1802 in Kirktown, Roxburghshire [reg.].  She was born c. Feb 1771, and chr. 1 Sep 1773 in Kirktown, daughter of Francis Oliver, a tenant at Turn, Kirktown [reg., calc., IGI].  At the time of their marriage, he was living at Turn, and she was living at Newmill, Kirktown [reg.].  They were living in Kirktown, Roxburghshire in Mar 1803, Jun 1805, May 1807, Feb 1809, and in Wilton, Roxburghshire in Oct 1810, Oct 1812, Mar 1815, Dec 1817 [reg.].  He worked as a laborer [reg.].  They immigrated to Canada (daughter Margaret in 1834 – cen.).  He died 12 Jan 1851 in Binbrook, Wentworth Co., Ontario, age 79 [GP].  She died 12 Aug 1854 in Binbrook, age 83 and 6 months [GP].  Both bur. in Knox Presbyterian Cemetery, Binbrook [OCFA, GP].  They had children:

1b. Mary Tinline.  Born 21 Mar 1803 in Kirktown, Roxburghshire [reg.].  At the time of her birth, her parents were living in Turn, Kirktown Parish [reg.].  She immigrated to Canada with her parents (possibly in 1834).  She died 25 Dec 1853, apparently unmarried, bur. in Knox Presbyterian Cemetery, Binbrook, Wentworth Co., Ontario [GP].

2b. Anne Tinline.  Born 7 Jun 1805 in Kirktown, Roxburghshire [reg.].  At the time of her birth, her parents were living in Turn, Kirktown Parish [reg.].

3b. Isobel Tinline.  Born 3 May 1807 in Kirktown, Roxburghshire [reg.].  At the time of her birth, her parents were living in Turn, Kirktown Parish [reg.].

4b. James Tinline.  Born 16 Feb 1809 in Kirktown, Roxburghshire [reg.].  At the time of his birth, his parents were living in Turn, Kirktown Parish [reg.].  He died 9 Nov 1848, age 39, bur. in Knox Presbyterian Cemetery, Binbrook, Wentworth Co., Ontario [OCFA, GP].

5b. Francis Tinlin.  Born 20 Oct 1810 at Leeheads, Wilton, Roxburghshire [reg. index, SCR under Tinten].  He immigrated to Canada, possibly in 1834.  In 1851 he was living in Binbrook Twp., Wentworth Co., Ontario [cen.].  He was living there in 1861, when he was unmarried, age 48, and working as a farmer [cen.].  He married (2nd?) Elizabeth Brims on 20 Nov 1861 in Wentworth Co. [OMR].  She was chr. 6 Feb 1821 in Thurso, Caithness (Scotland), daughter of Charles and Isabella (McKenzie) Brims [OMR, IGI].  She died 7 Apr 1868, age 47, bur. Auld Kirk Cemetery, Binbrook [GP].  In 1871 he was living in Binbrook, was a widower, and was working as a farmer [cen. (says born in Ontario)].  He was living in Binbrook in 1875 [Central Canadians].  In 1881 he was living in Binbrook, South Wentworth Co., Ontario and was a widower [cen.].  In 1891 he was in Binbrook, Wentworth Co., age 80, a widower [LT].  He died 31 Jul 1893 in Binbrook Twp., Ontario, aged 83, bur. Auld Kirk Cemetery, Binbrook [cert., GP].  He had children (obviously he either had an earlier wife, or some of these children are not his):

1c. [?] Dina Brims Tinline.  Born c. 1830, apparently a daughter or daughter-in-law of Francis Tinline (but his wife Elizabeth Brims was only 9 years old in 1830) [calc.].  Bur. in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Binbrook, Wentworth Co., Ontario [GP].  Elizabeth Brims had a sister named Diana Brims, born in 1830 in Caithness - perhaps this is her gravestone and the Tinline is a mistake?

2c. Brook Tinlin. [RLC].  [Should be Brook Tinlin, son of William and Sarah (Pettit) Tinlin?].

3c. Isabella Tinline.  Born 28 Feb 1863 in Binbrook, Ontario [cen., marr. rec.].  In 1871 she was living with her father in South Wentworth, Ontario [cen.].  In 1881 she was living with her father in Binbrook, South Wentworth Co., Ontario [cen.].  She married William B. Stewart on 23 Dec 1886 in Binbrook, Ontario [OMR].  He was born 13 Oct 1857 in Binbrook, Ontario, son of John and Grace Stewart [marr. rec., cen., death cert.].  In 1901 they were living in Binbrook, and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  He died of tuberculosis on 25 Mar 1907 in Fruitland, Wentworth Co., Ontario, age 47, when his occupation had been fruit grower [cert.].  In 1911 she was living in Saltfleet, Wentworth Co., Ontario, a widow, working as a fruit grower [cen.].  She died in 1936 [GP].  They were both bur. in Knox Presbyterian Cemetery, Binbrook [GP].

4c. [possibly] Clifford Cayuga Tinline.  Bur. Auld Kirk Cemetery, Binbrook, Wentworth Co., Ontario [GP].

6b. Helen Tinline.  Born 30 Oct 1812 in Wilton, Roxburghshire, chr. six weeks later at the Burgher Congregation, Hawick, Roburghshire [reg.].  She married William Simpson on 28 Nov 1831 in Eckford and on 18 Dec 1831 in Maxton, Roxburghshire [regs.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Maxton, and she was living in Eckford [reg.].  He was born c. 1809-11 in Roxburgh or Kelso, Roxburghshire, son of John and Elizabeth (Whyte) Simpson [cen., death cert. (MCK)].  In 1841 they were living in Menslaws Haugh, Bedrule, Roxburghshire and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  In 1851 they were living in Dryhop, Yarrow, Selkirkshire, and he was working as a farm servant [cen.].  In 1861 they were living at Thornilaw Ploughman's Cottage, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire, and he was working as a ploughman [cen.].  In 1871 they were living at Easter Langlee, Melrose, Roxburghshire and he was working as a farm servant [cen.].  In 1881 they were living at the Farm Cottage, Melrose and he was working as an agricultural labourer [cen.].  She died 30 Dec 1890 in Joppa, Ladhope, Selkirkshire, age 78 [cert.].  He died 20 Dec 1895 at 114 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels, Selkirkshire, age 87 [cert. (MCK)].

7b. Margaret Tinline.  Born 11 Mar 1815 in Wilton, Roxburghshire, and chr. six weeks later at the Burgher Congregation, Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg.].  She immigrated to Canada in 1834 [cen.].  She married Isaiah Wardell in 1835 [LAC (marriage bond dated 26 Oct 1835)].  He was born c. 1804 in Smithville, Lincoln Co., Ontario, the son of Isaac and Mary (Griffin) Wardell and had been previously married to Elizabeth Tinline Culp (see TINLIN of BINBROOK family) [JD].  In 1851 they were living in Grimsby Township, Lincoln Co., Ontario and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  In 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 they were living in Canborough, Haldimand (later Monck) Co., Ontario and he was working as a farmer [cen. (no occupation in 1891)].  He died 23 Jul 1895 in Dunnville, Haldimand Co., Ontario, age 90, and was bur. there [cert., JD].  In 1901 she was living in Darling Road, Canborough, Monck Co., Ontario with her daughter Martha [cen.].  She died 30 Apr 1905 in Haldimand Co., Ontario, age 90, bur. in Dunnville [cert., JD].

8b. Christian “Christy” Tinline.  Born 22 Dec 1817 at Stirches, Wilton, Roxburghshire, and chr. there the following month [reg.].  She immigrated to Canada, possibly in 1834 [sister’s cen. record].  She married 1st John C. Tufford on 30 Mar 1839 in Grimsby, Ontario [Internet].  At the time, they were both living in Clinton, Ontario [Internet].  He was born in 1816, son of Isaac and Catharine (Cline) Tufford [Internet].  In 1851 they were living in Clinton and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  He died 7 Mar 1858 in Ontario, bur. in Beamsville, Lincoln Co., Ontario [Anc., Internet].  In 1861 she was living in Clinton, a widow [cen.].  She married 2nd Cyrus Culp between 1861 and 1871 [cen., death cert.].  He was born c. 1806 in Clinton Township, Lincoln Co., Ontario [cen., death cert.].  In 1871 and 1881 they were living in Clinton and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  She died 29 Jun 1890 in Clinton Township, bur. in Beamsville [cert., Internet].  In 1891 he was living with his daughter and son-in-law in South Grimsby, Wentworth South Co., Ontario, listed as a farmer [cen.].  He died 22 Jan 1893 in Beamsville, Lincoln Co., Ontario [cert.].

8a. George Tinline.  Chr. 31 Dec 1775 in Crailing, Roxburghshire [reg.].  [Probably the one who married Janet Bryden - see the TINLINE of SPROUSTON family.].

9a. Walter Tinline.  Chr. 5 Jul 1778 in Crailing, Roxburghshire [reg.].

10a. Mark Tinline.  Chr. 3 Oct 1784 in Crailing, Roxburghshire [reg.].

4. Helen Tinline.  Chr. 18 Jul 1731 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [reg.].  Possibly the Helen Tinline who married James Davidson on 30 Sep 1753 in Ancrum [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both residing in Ancrum [reg.].  [But James Davidson and Helen Hislop were having children in Ancrum 1754-60 – perhaps surname on marriage record is a mistake?  Not to mention that she had a younger sister named Helen, so probably died young.].

5. Helen Tinline.  Chr. 7 Dec 1735 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire [reg.].  Possibly the Helen Tinline who married James Riddell on 24 May 1761 in Ancrum [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, they were both residing in Ancrum [reg.].  They were living in Wilton, Roxburghshire in 1762-79 [SCR].
